Lighthouse – Boneyard Beach-Bridges & More

Sunset over the water near a large suspension bridge in Charleston, South Carolina.

Charleston delivers small-town charm in spades, from the shady courtyards and old Victorian homes to the horse-drawn carriages and six–yes, six–gorgeous beaches. But while the classic southern backdrop is a huge draw, this coastal stunner has plenty of big-city attractions. On this tour, we will experience beaches, lighthouses, ghostly rooms dating back to before the Revolutionary War, and much more.

Limited to only 12 attendees to allow for one-on-one time with your workshop host.

Charleston, South Carolina Photography Workshop

Historic Charm – Coastal Light – Timeless Southern Beauty

Step into the historic heart of Charleston, where cobblestone streets, grand live oaks, and coastal horizons create a photographer’s dream. This immersive workshop blends the architectural elegance of the Holy City with the serenity of its surrounding coastal landscapes. From sunrise sessions at Boneyard Beach and the Folly Beach Lighthouse, to evening captures along the Ravenel Bridge and the historic district’s gas-lit streets, you’ll learn to harness light, texture, and atmosphere to tell powerful visual stories.

Guided by Greg and Julia Johnson, this workshop offers a dynamic balance of hands-on field instruction, composition and lighting techniques, and faith-based reflection. You’ll explore both city and shoreline, photographing local birds, dolphins, and seascapes, as well as the timeless charm of Charleston’s gardens and waterfront architecture. Each location offers new creative challenges — from long-exposure night photography to natural-light portraits beneath centuries-old oak canopies.

Your Daily Charleston Experience

Each day begins with the soft glow of coastal sunrise, capturing the driftwood silhouettes of Boneyard Beach and the pastel skies over the Folly Beach Lighthouse. After a relaxed breakfast and image review, we dive into mid-morning editing sessions and technical coaching, where you’ll refine your compositions and master Lightroom and Photoshop workflow.

Afternoons bring guided explorations through Charleston’s historic streets and gardens, where you’ll photograph iconic landmarks, bridges, and wildlife at your own pace with one-on-one support. As twilight falls, we shift to low-light and night photography, capturing reflections on the water and the architectural glow of the city. Evenings close with group critique and fellowship, discussing technique, storytelling, and the spiritual connection behind every image.

Why Charleston?

Few places in America offer the blend of history, light, and Southern grace that Charleston does. Whether photographing the remains of the Pitt Street Bridge, the Atlantic coast’s sweeping vistas, or the playful dolphins and shorebirds, every frame captures a piece of timeless beauty. This workshop is perfect for photographers seeking to hone technical skill, deepen creative expression, and reconnect with the wonder of creation through art and community.
